Here’s a sure sign spring has arrived in Niagara.
The world famous Welland Canal between Lakes Erie and Ontario opened for the 122nd year of continuous operation at 10 am on Tuesday, March 22nd. This canal allows ships to bypass Niagara Falls which joins the two lakes. The captain of the first upbound ship through the 42 kilometre (27 miles) canal at Lock 3 will be presented with a, “Top Hat”. The tradition dates back to 1947.
Captain Peter Schultz of the Peter S. Cresswell accepted the Top Hat.
Here he is seen on the observation deck of Lock Three with his ship in the background.
This ship canal is a popular tourist destination for those visiting Niagara Falls. The Welland canal is a great educational adventure for the whole family this March Break. Combine it with a trip to one of the many Niagara Falls attractions that are now open for the season.
