Niagara Helicopter owner and pilot Ruedi Hafen and the Niagara Parks Police are in the news again.
On June 18th two New York State Police officers were hoisted to safety by Hafen and Niagara Parks Police Officer Shawn Black after their rescue boat was grounded by fog about a quarter- mile above the falls. The two officers on the boat had earlier successfully rescued four teenagers who apparently had run out of gas above the falls.
Pilot Hafen flew Constable Black, who hung from a 120 foot-long-rope attached to the helicopter, to the rescue scene. Each stranded officers was dramatically, one at a time, provided harnesses and helmets then attached to the rope and flown to shore. The abandoned police boat still sits in the water above the falls.
Congratulations to Ruedi Hafen, Shawn Black and the officers of The Niagara Parks Police High Angle Rescue Team (HART) who have regularly practiced this type of rescue.
Here’s as photo of Ruedi posing beside one of his helicopters.
