There have been 43 presidents of the United States since George Washington became president in 1789. Twenty of these have visited Niagara Falls, Canada.
Here’s a few comments attributed to them after they viewed the falls.
Abraham Lincoln (1861-65). When he visited in 1857 he wrote, “Niagara Falls has the power to excite reflection and emotion.”
William Taft (1909-13). He said, speaking in Niagara Falls New York, “Niagara Falls according to my way of thinking belongs to the whole nation.”
Theodore Roosevelt (1901-09). “Teddy” took a ride on the Maid of the Mist and declared, “It’s a wonderful trip. I would have not missed it for the world."
Harry S Truman (1945-53). When he visited the Table Rock area in Niagara Falls, Canada when asked what he thought of the Falls said, “I sure wouldn’t want to go over them."
Jimmy Carter (1977-81). “Jimmy” as he preferred to be called has visited Niagara Falls on two occasions, one visit on October 1, 1980 on his 56th birthday and the other on July 15 and 16th, 1996 when he and his wife Rosalynn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
I had the pleasure of showing these two great people around for two days. On one occasion we ran into the former Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau in the lobby of the Renaissance Hotel. Jimmy told me, “Niagara Falls is a great place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I think we both feel younger now."
