Here's a great piece of trivia to fool your friends.
The Niagara River is not really a river but a great strait some 58 kilometres (36 miles) long connecting Lakes Erie and Ontario. The falls of Niagara are almost the mid-way point of the strait where the the average drop at the Canadian Horseshoe Falls is 52 metres (170 feet). The drop in elevation between the two lakes is 99 metres (326 feet).
The definition of a strait is "a narrow channel of water connecting two large bodies of water". The Niagara "River" travels from south to north, unlike most rivers in this part of Canada. Earlier maps of refer to the Niagara Strait and not the Niagara River.
