Years ago when I was going through old copies of The Globe Newspaper (that’s where today’s Globe and Mail got part of its name) I came across an article about Sir Winston Churchill when he visited Niagara Falls with his daughter Mary in 1944. It mentioned that he traveled by car on a Saturday along the lower Niagara Parkway to Queenston Heights Restaurant. He was quoted in the article to say, “this is the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world”. I used the quote in a few promotion pieces that I wrote for the Niagara Parks and the quote stuck. You’ll see it in plenty of today’s promotional Niagara Falls literature.
Here's another story related to this visit. I found with the newspaper several duplicate black and white copies of Churchill and his daughter. I searched out an address for Mary Churchill and sent the duplicates to her. She was still alive at the time (maybe she still is). About six months later I received a very impressive looking letter from Rhodesia with a return name on the envelope of Mary Sommes. It was the married name of Mary Churchill. It turns out her husband was the Governor-General of Rhodesia. In her letter she went on to thank me for the photos and to say her visit to Niagara Falls was one of the most pleasant times she ever spent with her father. It was a nice letter to receive.
