SPRING HAS ALMOST SPRUNG AT NIAGARA

One sure sign that Spring is just around the corner is that the Crocus in Queen Victoria Park near the falls are starting to pop there heads through the ground. In a few weeks we should see the Daffodils joining them.
Another sign, the ice-bridge below the falls has almost completely gone. I took this photo at 9:30 in the morning and it appears the American Falls is on fire. That’s because the air is warmer (hallelujah) than the cold water. Check out the large chunk of ice that’s stubbornly hanging around. It will probably be here until early April.
Once all the ice from Lake Erie above the falls has floated down and over the falls and clears the Niagara River into Lake Ontario we can expect to see the Maid of the Mist boats enter the water again for their 163rd season!
I think Old-Man Winter has finally left us. Good riddance to him. He won’t be missed.

Will be flying into Buffalo for a visit to NF. What is the best way to get from airport to Crown Plaza and is this a nice hotel thank you

Janie, The Crown Plaza Hotel is one of Niagara's historic hotelsdating back to the mid 1920's It's been completely renovated. It is in a superb location to the falls. Rooms at the front of the hotel offer wonderful views of the Canadian and American Falls.Several other hotels in Niagara Falls also afford the same views. You can take as taxi from the airport across the border or arrange for a Canadian taxi to pick you up at the airport and drive you to your hotel. One company in Canada that offers this service is Niagara Airbus at www.niagaraairbus.com. Hope this helps.

We will be coming into NF on the 13th of April. Hoping the Maid will be running. Can you help us feel optimistic?

Ted, I wish I could be more positive but because of the ice still in the Niagara River I don't believe you'll see the Maid in the water by April 13th. I have been known to be wrong. The best bet is to check on this is to phone the Maid of the Mist office directly at 905-358-5781 a few days before you arrive. I'll also contact them and when I have a date when their first boat will be in the water I'll post it.

Suzanne, There are lots of various churches in the Niagara area and I'm sure all of them will have an Easter service on Easter Sunday, April 12th. The local phone book or the internet have these listings. In year past,some church denominations have gathered at the brink of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls at Sunrise on Easter morning.If the weather is nice this is a beautifulsight. The Niagara Parks Floral Showcase near the falls has its annual Easter display of lilies,Spring bulbs and Schizanthus.The attraction is open daily free of charge. there is a fee for parking. Hope this helps.

hi i love canada i live in indiana but i went there on vacation and went under the falls and on the maid of the mist plus everything else they had i plan on coming back in 3 years but anyways we spent 600 dollars there by

I am finally traveling to the falls on Spring Break next week. I am hoping that the Maid will be running (one of my main reasons for coming). Do you think the Maid will open next week or is the ice still in the river?

Renee, Sorry, it's doubtful the Maid of the Mist will be open next week. I checked with the folks at the Maid and they tell me they cannot say the opening date until at least nine days before they open. I'm guessing it will be near the first of May. I'll keep an eye out for an opening date. You'll have to come back in the summer!.

Hi George! Great blog! Since my son was 8 years old or so, he has said he `wants to live in Canada`. The only time he has been is when he was 5. He's now 13 and I thought what a great Spring Break trip for us from Michigan! We are headed your way this weekend. Besides the falls of course, any other great attractions I should be sure they don't miss out on?? p.s. I DID make reservations at the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Theatre!!

Mary,There are really SO MANY things to do in Niagara Falls at any time of the year.Just walking near the falls, looking at the lights on the falls at night,walking up and down Clifton Hill, taking in any of the many man-made and natural attractions,Journeying to the top of a tower,taking in an IMAX movie,visiting the nearby Welland Canal(where ships climb the mountain between two lake),walking the quaint main street in Niagara on the Lake,where you can also Fort George ( no relation) or take in a Shaw play are a few of the things to keep you busy.

Carolyn, I'm not sure what I am `to keep up to date`.The blog is not really intended to be an event calendar(You can get that by going to www.tourismniagara.com)m but a blog of trevia,and interesting facts about Niagara Falls.Hope this helps.
