I must be getting old. I can remember when Brian Dougherty and Calvin Rand in 1961 proposed a small festival to celebrate the plays of English playwright George Bernard Shaw in the quiet lazy town of Niagara on the Lake.
Shaw Festival opened for the 50th season on April 7th. It will run until October 30, 2011.
Eleven diverse productions take place on the festivals four stages. Opening the season was Candida at the Royal George Theatre. Also included on the playbill this year is a sparkling new production of My Fair Lady.
Travelling to Niagara on the Lake at the mouth of Lake Ontario is a breeze when you take the Niagara Parkway. It’s about a twenty minute drive north from Niagara Falls, Canada. Winston Churchill, when he visited Niagara in the 1940’s, called the drive, “one of the prettiest Sunday afternoon drives in the world”. It still is a highlight of any visit to Niagara.
