NIAGARA’S RAINBOW BRIDGE IS 70 YEARS OLD THIS MONTH By George Bailey

| It took two years and 10 months to build before the international Rainbow Bridge between Niagara Falls, N.Y. and Ontario was officially opened on November 1, 1941.
The bridge was built to replace the Upper Steel Arch Bridge. Locals called it the Honeymoon Bridge. This bridge was destroyed when in January 1938, the ice build-up below the Falls created such extreme pressure that it actually pushed the bridge off its footings. There was enough warning to close the bridge and no lives were lost. Over the course of a few months the bridge slowly broke apart and fell into the river. Thousands of visitors came to Niagara to see the sight.
Today, the Rainbow Bridge stands as a link between two friendly countries. I’ve attached a photo of the Rainbow Bridge. Look closely and you can see a corner of the American Falls. Just a reminder, the annual CAA Winter Festival of Lights begins, November 5 and continues until January 31,2013. I hope to see you there.
