This distinction goes to 22 year old Sam Patch who in October of 1829 erected a 90 foot high platform over the Niagara River at the base of Goat Island on the U.S. side of the border.
Remember there were no bridges at this time that crossed the river. A huge crowd gathered as Patch stepped to the edge of the platform kissed and American flag and dove off into the river striking it with a great splash and vanished. Seconds later he surfaced unharmed and swam ashore.
Like the daredevils of today, Patch didn’t gain anything significantly financial for his feat. Instead, spectators awarded the daredevil with applause instead of cold cash.
Years later he lost his life when he tried to duplicate the feat by jumping off the 100-foot high Genesee Falls in Rochester, N.Y.
