Here’s another free attraction to visit in Niagara Falls, Canada.
Mount Carmel was the first monastery of the Carmelite Order in Canada. The original residence was a large two storey stone house on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment not far from the present building. This structure was built between 1894 and 1897 but has undergone several revisions over the years. You can see in early photographs of Niagara Falls taken from Niagara Falls, New York the original Mount Carmel Monastery in the distance.
Today, it’s a popular spot where tour guides take their guests. The public is welcome seven days a week between 9 am and 5 pm and there's even free parking.
Check out their gorgeous chapel. Their brochure describes the chapel this way, "The main chapel possesses a unique beauty due to its gothic and masculine character, as well as monastic simplicity". I've attached a photo of the chapel. Spend some time on the lovely grounds of the monastery. Sit on a bench and relax. If you listen very carefully you might even be able to hear the roar of Niagara Falls.
