LOOK AND LISTEN TO NIAGARA FALLS TO LEARN WHAT THE DAY WILL BRING By
2009-03-06 12:34:42
| When I started this blog late last year, I said I'd talk about how you can look and listen to the falls and predict the weather for the day. Well, when I opened the second floor window of my home (I'm about five kilometres from the falls) a few days ago I could hear the deep roar of the falls was much louder than it normally sounded. There was also no high plume of mist in the air hanging over the falls. These were two sure signs of impending gloomy weather. I knew that the day would be a stormy one. Why? The loud sound meant that shallow Lake Erie (approximately 60 feet or 18.2 metres) in the south was being churned up by storms and pushing more water to the southwest over Niagara Falls. Hence, the falls were louder. The fact there was a low plume meant low humidity, which also is an indicator of poor weather. Old Timers are often quoted in early Niagara Falls Guidebooks about these signs. By the way, the weather that day was cloudy and rainy. Bang-on! When I worked in the tourist industry years ago this also meant increased business in Niagara restaurants, attractions and gift shops. Today, it's still the case.
The photo below shows what the plume looks like on a nice day in Niagara.

Victro What hotel would you recommend for a great look at the falls and is also resonablewhen it comes to room rates.
George Victro, Do you want me to get shot!!! I can't recommend any specific hotel, but I can tell you there are all price ranges of hotels and motels in Niagara Falls. The ones with a view of the falls are more expensive then the ones found without a view of the falls and the farther you are away from the falls generally the room rates are lower. Check out the niagara Falls tourism sites for a list and prices. Hope this helps.
chad I am currently in Toronto and will traveling to Niagra. What is the best way to go? Is there public parking? I want to get to the falls area and check out tha falls, shop and dine? I will be traveling through with my family, back to Masschusetts.
George Chad, The fastest way to Niagara Falls from Toronto is to take the QEW Highway towards Hamilton and follow the signs towards Niagara Falls. About an hour and a half drive on a not to busy day. From the QEW you will be taking Highway 420( it only goes east) towards the U.S. border. Just before you cross the bridge at the border into the United States continue on to the falls. Another alternate slower but leisurely route is to take the QEW and when you cross over the Skyway at St. Catharines that crosses over the Welland Canal take the exit towards Niagara on the Lake. Spend some time in this pretty town then drive the Niagara Parkway south to Niagara Falls, It's one of the prettiest drives in the world. You'll be in the falls in about a half an hour. Longer if you linger at roadside fruit and vegetable stands and take photographs of the Niagara River which you'll be travelling parallel too. Good Luck.

george Nancy, Thanks for your note about the Globe and Mails Maid of the Mist story. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to make a comment about this story. However,I can say that the Maid of the Mist is an excellent well run attraction and has been for many years. Regards, George
