The small island that separates the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls is called, Luna Island. It’s called Luna Island because at one time many years ago it was the best location to view Lunar Bows-Night Rainbows.
An old Niagara guidebook advises, “Those who may be in Niagara Falls a few days before or after a full moon should not fail to go to Luna Island to see the Lunar Bow. It is the most unreal of all real things - a weird and shadowy beauty”.
Today, Luna Bows are a rarity because of the great amount of artificial light found around this area. However, I did a few years ago on a particularly dark night, accept for the full moon, see such a bow. It was one of those rare times when I didn’t have my camera with me. I still kick myself.
Attached is a shot of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls (on the right) taken during a summer day. Don’t look for a Lunar Bow here.

Logan I am a grade 6 student. I am doing a report on Niagara Falls. Could you please answer a few questions for me? If so please reply back to me and I will email you my 10 questions. This is for the heritage fair. Thanks, Logan
George Bailey Logan, I'm reluctant to answer your questions because it will no doubt again `open the door` for many others doing reports. However,Because you're a Grade 6 student (my granddaughter is also) I'll try and answer your questions.Fire away!
ruth lent Your festivals and events section is referring to 2009 ... how can one plan a vacation at the Falls in 2011 if the most current info is 2009 ????
George Bailey Ruth, BINGO!, you're right on. I'll talk to the people who handle this area. Thanks for pointing it out.
HOSTEL LA CORTE It´s amazing that there are still so many places in the world whose existance I ignore such as the luna island.
niles when was it officially
George Bailey Ii's not clear but I suspect it was named Luna Island when the first Europeans visited Niagara Falls in the later part of the 1,600's.
