BIRTHPLACE OF THE FALLS By GEORGE BAILEY 2010-02-09 14:46:29
| When I drive the Niagara Parkway north I look to my right at Queenston Heights opposite the Brock Monument into the the United States side of the border. I always take a second look. You ask why? Well, this is the location of the Niagara escarpment and the birthplace of the falls some twelve thousand years ago. During the Glacial Age(500,000 to 2 million years ago), glaciers melted and formed lakes. Lake Algonquin(about where Lake Erie is now) overflowed and ran downhill towards Lake Iroquois(Lake Ontario). The rushing waters, which we now call the Niagara River, chewed out a channel that we now call the Niagara Gorge. The falls was made when the riverbed dropped off suddenly like an underwater cliff at this location.Originally it was only 7 metres high(35 feet). Today the falls has receded back cutting out a much deeper 58 metre(176 foot) gorge some 12 kilometres(7.5 miles) to it's present location.
It's estimated the falls, 10,000 years from now, will eventually disappear as it recedes into Lake Erie in the south. So hurry, visit Niagara Falls today before it's to late to see them!

George John Rigney, Sorry, I haven't got back to you until now. A bit of a clitch on the site has now been corrected. My book, `Marilyn Monroe and the Making of Niagara` is no longer available from me. I have 4 copies that I have kept for posterity. I see they sell on E-Bay as a `Collector's Item`. This book I originally sold for $10.00 to cover my costs. Someone is now asking $110.00 for the book.Wow!
