CHIPPAWA AND WEST POINT By GEORGE BAILEY

| Here's a little known story involving a Niagara historic site Chippawa. That small village is now part of Niagara Falls located along the Niagara River just above the falls. A major battle took place here during the War of 1812 between the British and the Americans. During the Battle of Chippawa (it took place on July 4th,1814) U.S. General Jacob Brown was greatly out numbered by the British. Even though the Americans were severely out numbered, they soundly defeated the British that day. It seems Scott's men, due to a lack of the traditional blue cloth to make their uniforms, were clothed in gray battle dress. To commemorate Scott's victory "at the skirmish of Chippawa" an order was issued in 1815 at West Point that the cadets should thereafter be uniformed in the fabric of gray.
From Fort Erie, south of Niagara Falls, to Niagara-on-the-Lake, north of Niagara Falls, you can visit the past, carefully restored and recreated.

Constance Weatherford Toronto's despicable behavior at the G20 has convinced me and my family that we will cancel our planned vacation there this summer. We cannot support the police state - violent - mentality of this place. Toronto/ONTARIO will NEVER BE VISITED BY OUR FAMILY - EVER.
Cheryl Sheard I will be coming to Niagara in August for my daughter's 18th birthday. She has always wanted to come there since she was little and watched the commercials. I would like to visit the historical part, as I am a Chippewa Indian from Georgia Island.
Rhonda I have really enjoyed reading your blogs. My husband and I are planning a trip to the falls with my 70 year old mother. We enjoy the FREE things in life and from reading your entries I do believe that you can make our trip a really memorable one . Can you please give us some pointers on when, where and what to do ? Thanks in advance from Springfield Louisiana
George Rhonda, Boy,that's quite a request. There are so many free things to do at Niagara it's hard for me to begin. But here goes in point form. -visit the Niagaras Parks School of Horticulture about a 15 minute drive along the beautiful lower Niagara Parkway. Lots of flowers and trees to keep you busy for a few hours. -Take another trip to the Floral Showcase, where you'll findbeautiful floral displays. -go a quarter mile south along the parkway to the Dufferin Islands nature area. paths ate accessible to wheelchair users. There's even a pool there to take a dip in. -travel the parkway either north or south and take along a picnic. There are lots of tables along the way and in some locations even an outdoor charcoal pit. -a must is a trip 21 miles north to the pretty little Victorian village of Niagara on the lake. A great people watching place. Have an ice-cream. -travel to Lock 3 along the Welland canal ( about 20 minutes away) and watch the`ships climb the mountain`. -take in one of the many wine tasting experiences along the Niagara Wine Trail. The route is well marked. I hope this gets you going.
