Before many of the high rise hotels were built in the Fallsview area above Niagara Falls there was one structure that dominated the skyline.
The Skylon Tower was constructed in 1965 at a cost of $7 million. Since then it has had various owners. Currently it is owned by the Yerich family who also operate nearby hotels. The top of the tower has two dining rooms and an observation platform. At the base are several gift shops, a 3D/4D theatre and several food outlets. The view from the top, in my opinion, is still one of the best.
Some might be surprised to learn that towers are not new to Niagara. In 1867 there were several Observation towers at and around the Lundy’s Lane battlefield. This is where one of the most significant battles took place between the Americans and British during the War of 1812.
There was also a 50 foot wooden tower called Street’s Pagoda built near the brink of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in 1860.
No, these last towers no longer exist.
Attached is a view from atop the Skylon Tower
